Add Spice to your Health

Spices and essential oils for medicinal qualities have been a mainstay in eastern medicine for centuries. Today, the essential oil business is booming, because many of these natural remedies are proven to be effective and essential oils come in a purer form. But many spices in our cabinet can help keep us healthy. We all still need our doctor, but here are a few examples of what spices can do to keep us healthy.

Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper warms our body and stimulates circulation, which can clear our sinuses and is good for our cardiovascular system. It also speeds up our metabolism. It is great for a cold or to warm up if you have cold extremities.  It also has one of the highest botanical sources of Vitamin C.


Basil can be used to treat stress-induced insomnia, indigestion, and tension.  It can be very cooling to the body.  In addition to using it as a seasoning, you can infuse it in tea or water.


Turmeric is one of the best anti-inflammatory agents.  It is shown to help joint swelling, arthritis and headaches.  Its antioxidants help protect the liver from toxins, which may ward off a hangover. Unlike Advil, turmeric is not damaging to liver. Stir it in tea or take a turmeric supplement in the same way you would a pre-bed Advil. 


Ginger is used for alleviating motion sickness and other forms of nausea.  Take it with you on your next cruise, just in case the water gets rough.


Cinnamon is an anti-inflammatory and is high in antioxidants.  It is helpful for circulation, digestion, and lowers blood sugar.


Thyme is helpful for coughs and bronchitis.  It is a natural antiseptic, so you can make a thyme infusion and gargle with it to sooth a sore throat

Cloves, Cumin, Nutmeg and Cardamom

These spices are great digestive aids, especially with mucus forming food like most dairy products.  Cumin is great for upset stomachs for any reason.


Garlic is the herb for colds, flu and sore throats.  It is an immune booster and is believed to lower cholesterol.
